Taking a fresh look at the importance to society of linguistic activities

Urban Policy and Research Division

In modern society flooded with vast information due to the proliferation of the Internet, useful or essential information for individuals or organizations must be selected. Also, for the selected information to be put to use as knowledge, they need to be structured and recompiled. In the field of language data processing, these techniques are researched and developed as basic technologies such as data extraction, automatic classification, summarizing, machine translation, sentence analysis and rephrasing, and then, are being put to practical use as products.
“Words” are not only the constituent elements of information: their more important function is as a “means of communication”. The Language Data Processing Division is aiming at wider activities and wishing to conduct research on words in other fields.
